Thursday night at the Peppermint Club in Beverly Hills, I was able to catch up with FAULKNER before their album release show.

The venue was packed with friends and fans, but the four guys were able to sneak away to a quiet bar next door to chat with me about their album and what inspires them.

FAULKNER, made up of four incredibly talented musicians, are local to the LA scene, formed in Venice. [left to right] Christian Hogan (drums), Lucas Asher (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Dimitri Farougias (bass), Eric Scullin (vocals, multi-instrumentalist, producer)

Boston: Thanks for spending some time with me guys! Before we start off, I just want to hear more about you guys. How do you describe your own band? How did you form? How did you get into music?

Dimitri: We met here in LA. Just through the LA music scene in 2013. We were all in different projects, but Luke just brought us all together. We started playing, starting writing. First song was “These Kids Nowadays”...felt awesome. We kept doing it, and here we are.
Lucas: The style of music we play is alternative with urban leaning. We’ve collaborating with Wu-Tang Clan frontman RZA for releasing our debut album “PARIAHS” and this is our album release party, so it will be out tonight!

Boston: So why did you guys want to get a band started?

Lucas: It’s just chasing the sound that you have in your head. What’s interesting about FAULKNER is that we all are very different people, so everyone brings an element to the band that kind of holds everyone together, that makes a cohesive sound. So Eric produced the whole album as well, with collaborations from JP Bowersock from The Strokes, Mark Needham from The Killers, and RZA. Dimitri plays bass and arrangement, Christian is percussion and drums and arrangement, and [I’m] rhythm guitar, singer, songwriter.

Boston: Just to clarify again, what would you describe your style as?

Dimitri: It’s a weird clusterfuck between The Clash, Bowie and Dr. Dre, for what it’s worth. There are elements of all of that in the album.

Boston: Awesome! That sounds really cool. Now, switching it up to more personal questions, because I was told that Lucas can drink a whole bottle of tequila and not get drunk, and Eric can apparently play every instrument that he touches.

Eric: One of those things is true.
Lucas: I do drink wine before I jog, that is a true fact.

Boston: Is there a reason for drinking the wine before the run?

Lucas: I just like it. Antioxidants. It’s good for your heart.

Boston: Let’s go back to the album again before we wrap up. What should we expect from it?

Eric: I have no idea what to expect, that I know for sure…[laughter] and we got other things in the can here that we’re working on

Boston: How long did it take you guys to record?

Dimitri: A couple years. Not all at once though.

Boston: What should we expect after the album gets released? Any tours coming up?

Lucas: Yeah, we’re doing a lot of shows. We have a new music video coming out for “Hot Streak”. It’ll drop in March. Parts of it were shot in Italy, Morocco and Imperial Dunes.

Boston: Wow. That’ll be a wicked video!

Lucas: Yeah, we’ll have a lot of teasers coming out for it.

Boston: Sweet; can’t wait to see it! That’s all I have for you guys. Thanks for spending time with me!
